Your lawn is nature’s version of carpet for your outdoor space and needs the proper care and nutrients to get full and thick like carpet. Our Sun Valley landscaping team believes that caring for your lawn is a lifelong partnership versus being like the “other guy” and only applying a couple of applications per year without monitoring the overall health. You wouldn’t let your carpet in your home be patchy, so why let your yard? It can be a bit problematic when we finally get our spring thaw here in Nebraska and see what our lawn and landscapes look like for the first time. Usually, our yards don’t look as great as they did going into winter. After a few months of snow and ice, your landscape could undoubtedly use some love and attention from our team of experts. We have customizable maintenance packages designed to meet all of your lawn maintenance needs based on your yard and lifestyle. Let’s mow over some of the perks to help you decide the best services for you and your yard.

Fertilizer+

Our lawn maintenance programs include everything your lawn needs to thrive and resist stress. They are completely customizable for each property and how hands-off each homeowner wants to be. Most lawns need 4-6 applications of fertilizer per year. Our Fertilizer+ Program includes everything you need to promote a green, healthy lawn all season based on UNL turf research and over 20 years of field experience. We apply the appropriate nutrients six times per year, including an all-organic component, grub control, fall aeration, and overseeding. Any weeds present are treated at each visit.

Mowing

Our team of professional mowers take pride in their lawn striping, trimming, and edging. We provide weekly mowing services based on the growth rate of the lawn and taper mowing down to every other week in the fall as growth rates slow down. After each visit, all hard surfaces are blown off to clean lawn clippings off of them, leaving the property with a clean, manicured look each week.

Spring Lawn Clean-up

We have a popular spring lawn clean-up program that pairs nicely with our spring bed maintenance program (more on that service later). Our spring lawn clean-up service includes cleaning winter debris out of the lawn and an initial edging along concrete surfaces to start the year out with crisp clean edges.

Fall Leaf & Debris Lawn Clean-up

Fall can be a busy time of year with football games, kids’ sports, and heading into the holiday season. Our popular fall lawn clean-up program pairs nicely with our fall bed maintenance program (more on that service later). Don’t waste time cleaning up the leaves. Our fall lawn leaf clean-up service covers two leaf clean-up visit in November to mulch, bag, and remove leaves off of the lawn before winter.

Perimeter Pest Control

This service is an excellent add-on to our fert+ or other lawn maintenance programs, but it is not sold separately. This includes three applications around your home to keep common household pests outside, and most properties are only $25 for each application.

Irrigation Maintenance

This program allows you the peace of mind that we will take care of your irrigation system throughout the growing season. Activation takes care of getting the system up and running, checking every head for proper coverage. Any repairs needed would be taken care of at this time and invoiced separately. We schedule a summer check to stop out mid-season as we approach the hot, dry months to make sure sprinkler heads are still providing proper coverage and adjusting the clock settings to water appropriately for your lawns changing needs. In late October and early November, we start winterizing irrigation systems. This includes blowing them out to protect them from damage during our brutally cold Nebraska winters.

Landscape Bed Maintenance

We have four landscape bed maintenance programs tailored specifically for your home and gardening needs, from two visits a year to bi-weekly visits. Our landscape bed maintenance service includes routine visits to pull weeds, tidy up beds and clean-up hard surfaces, remove sticks and debris, as well as skillful pruning in the spring and fall of plants and shrubs, deadhead flowers as needed, pulling and spraying weeds as needed. Hard surfaces are blown clean to leave the property tidy after each visit.

Plant Care Service

Our plant care service is an excellent add-on to any of our landscape maintenance programs. It includes three routine applications designed to feed plants in the landscape and apply a pre-emergent to keep weeds at bay between detail visits. An insecticide is applied to ornamental shrubs and perennials for common pests such as Japanese Beetles.

Spring Landscape Clean-up + Fresh Mulch

As mentioned above, this is a perfect service to pair with our spring lawn clean-up service. Our team of experts will professionally clean out your garden of winter debris, prune back ornamental grasses and perennials that were left up over winter, and re-establish crisp edges around mulch areas. We apply granular pre-emergent to the mulch beds, top-dress with 1” layer of fresh premium mulch, and apply a balanced fertilizer to the ornamental shrubs and perennials.

Fall Bed Clean-up

Round-out the garden season with our fall bed clean-up service. This service pairs well with our fall lawn leaf clean-up service. The final bed maintenance visit of the season is to clean up fall debris, cut back appropriate perennials before winter, and remove annuals that need to be cleaned out for the season.

Healthy lawns and gardens require continuous maintenance throughout the year, and it can be time-consuming and takes expertise to do well. Contact us for more information on our maintenance packages and how we can help you bring your lawn to life.

The post What are the Best Maintenance Programs for your yard and lifestyle? appeared first on Sun Valley Landscaping.

Removing the leaves, weeds, twigs, and other obvious debris leftovers from winter not only improves the appearance of the yard it is also horticulturally beneficial at preventing disease. We trim shrubs back to help maintain a manicured appearance throughout the season which also aids flowering shrubs to yield more blooms. Well, almost. We are excited here at Sun Valley Landscaping to ditch the gloom of winter and usher in long-awaited, warm temperatures. Kicking off the season with a thorough spring clean-up is what your landscape needs. Our team of professionals have put together a checklist of tasks and tips that will get you started enjoying your outdoor space!

Spring Cleaning Checklist:

Freshen Up Your Beds And Tree Rings

Bed maintenance – Spring clean-ups for your beds will speed up the growing process. Begin by raking out the beds to get rid of the debris that accumulated over the winter. Cut back perennials and ornamental grasses to rejuvenate, but take care to not cut too short. If you don’t have a have a permanent edge on your beds, give them a good, clean, spaded edge. Once the beds are cleaned and edged, a fresh covering of mulch will top it off. We recommend a consistent depth of 2-3”, but avoid mulch “volcanoes” (excessive mulch build-up around the collar of a tree). We carry four varieties of mulch so you can match to your existing landscape.

Trees and shrubs – These often bear the brunt of snowfall, literally. Check for branches that may have broken or are damaged by ice storms. Prune them or if necessary have them removed by a professional. Damaged trees are more prone to insect and disease infestations, while proper care can help shrubs repair themselves.

Lawn TLC

Mowing – This may take a little more time, but once the grass begins to green up it will be time to start mowing. Mowing frequencies should be based on the growth rate of your turf. However, during the growing season, we recommend once every 5-7 days on average.

Pre-Emergent and fertilization – We are gearing up to lay the first application of fertilizer in early spring. We recommend, and will be applying a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertilizer combined with pre-emergent. This is going to give you the best control on broadleaf weed control, which begins to pop up in the spring. It’s best practice to apply pre-emergent when the soil temperatures approach 55 degrees.

Seeding – The winter weather may have been hard on your turf to the point of damage. If you have bare spots or damage, you may need to apply seed. Spring time is not ideal for application, but may be necessary. If you seed, make sure you DO NOT apply a pre-emergent as it will prevent your grass seed from growing.

Assess and Repair Winter Damage

Check your hardscape – Don’t solely focus on only the living part of your landscape. Older masonry walls and patios should be inspected for joint damage or cracks in the stone.

Inspect your irrigation system – Once the ground has thawed, and the temperature has consistently stayed above freezing, turn on your irrigation system to make sure it’s in working condition.

However, you can customize your containers year-round.

To start, make sure your containers will withstand freezing and thawing cycles. Stay away from those made of ceramics, terra cottas and thin plastics. Instead, opt for fiberglass, metal or get really creative with a hollow log. Remember to allow drainage holes to be clear and use pot feet to raise the container in order to avoid freezing to the ground.

When choosing plants, make sure to get ones that are rated two zones colder than your area. We suggest evergreens such as dwarf alberta spruce, junipers, and holly. Not only do they ring in the holiday spirit, but they also survive the harsh winter months. Have fun experimenting with utilize varying heights and forms to create a beautiful container.

Finish off your winter container with holiday decor: pop in a few holly berries, artificial poinsettias and pinecones. To make a big splash, incorporate large holiday ornaments.

If you would like your containers customized for every season call Sun Valley Landscaping at 402-932-5704 to be added to our 2018 schedule.

While preparing your beds for the winter may be the last thing you want to do; it is arguably the most important. This time of the year, it is essential to winterize your property to ensure the health of your plant life for the spring.

Fall clean-ups can consist of many different tasks; here at Sun Valley Landscaping, we like to focus on key areas:

Cleanup leaves in beds and lawn

Remove any remaining weeds in beds

Prune shrubs and cut back select perennials

Remove suckers and saplings from trees

Rake around beds to tidy natural edges and boarders

Revive mulch and tidy rock beds

Empty hoses of water and winterize irrigation system

Annual flowers that have begun to brown and shrivel will need to be removed. Perennials, on the other hand, should be cut back just above the crown of the plant. Some plants, like ornamental grasses, continue to provide gorgeous winter interest in their dried state.

Every garden and garden lover is unique. Even though these practices make up a typical fall clean-up, if you would like to customize your service, please let us know right away.

Getting your outdoor entertainment space ready for fall doesn’t need to be a complete overhaul. Whether you’re utilizing it to entertain during football season, curl up with coffee and a good book, or create memories with friends and family, follow these simple “to-do’s” for creating fall-friendly outdoor living.

We like to think of the lawn as the canvas to your outdoor space; luscious full lawns help bring the accents of flowers and décor to the forefront of your landscape. You’ve heard us say it many times, and we’ll say it again; the best way to ensure a healthy lawn is through aeration and overseeding. In the Omaha Metro, we have very compact clay soil, which can lead to problems for your lawn. Aerating once a year helps loosen up the soil allowing air, water and nutrients to penetrate deep into the roots. Fall is the ideal time to overseed as weed pressure is at its lowest and soil temperature is at peak germination rates. Fertilization is the final step necessary to protect your lawn. Managing your lawn in the fall is critical in determining what your lawn looks like in the spring and early summer.

A great and easy way to transition your entertaining space is refreshing your summer containers, but don’t worry, you don’t have to completely rework them. Start by tucking in cool-season flowers as your summer annuals move past their prime. Next, fill in gaps with kale and fountain grass to create an autumn ambience. Add some flare with dried seed pods, Indian corn, or even some gourds and small pumpkins. Finish your container with sphagnum moss to complete your fall design. If you need some creative help, our floral designer, Diane is always excited to help!

Our final fall “honey-do” suggestion is to add bursts of warm colors with fall-blooming flowers. Mums are the go-to plant for fall gardens pulling yellow, orange, and red splashes of color. The flower shapes are incredibly varied from quill-like petals, to daisy shapes, and pom-pom forms. Sturdy Asters are another great perennial for the season. The pink, blue, and purple flowers offer a cool alternative to the warm colors of mums. Another flower to offer contrast to the warmer colors are coneflowers. While most notably known as the Black-Eyed Susan, coneflowers (Echinacea) are available in other colors as well allowing you to create arrangements outside of the traditional warm fall colors.

Be the envy of your neighborhood with an outdoor space ready for fall. Shorten your “honey-do” list to one check, call Sun Valley Landscaping.

A spring cleanup is vital to the health of your landscape as it includes everything you need to get your lawn and landscape ready for the year ahead with minimal maintenance and maximum enjoyment. With spring opening its doors early this year, people are eager to get their lawn and landscape ready for the year-ahead. Our team of professionals have identified some necessary spring tasks and tips that will have you saying,“bring on spring!”

Before you begin your spring checklist for your lawn or landscape, it is important to start with debris removal. Collect and remove all weeds, leaves and debris that have accumulated over the winter. Any debris collected during this process would be ideal to add to your compost pile if you have one! Here’s a fun fact, Sun Valley Landscaping recycles all debris to create a natural compost we use to make the best planting soil in town!

Spring Cleaning Checklist for your Landscape

Pruning

Cut back perennials & ornamental grasses to rejuvenate (caution not to cut too short)

Prune shrub roses in early spring when the buds begin to swell and new growth emerges (for more details, read UNL’s Article)

Remove all dead, damaged, or diseased branches from select trees and shrubs

Don’t trim spring-blooming plants (until after they bloom) such as: Lilac, Renaissance Spirea, or Forsythia

Spring Garden Fertilizer

We recommend a balanced, slow-release garden fertilizer (such as 14-14-14) in the spring to feed your soil and allow your plants to thrive

Compost is also a natural fertilization that improves your garden’s soil profile and helps with weed management

Bed Edging

Edging between your landscape beds and turf will create a clearly defined line or “natural edge” to hold your mulch in place and prevent turf from growing into your beds

How to: use a mechanical bed edger or spade to create a 2” vertical line between your landscape and your lawn.

Be sure to remove any extra soil and do not enlarge your beds (unless you want to!)

We also recommend edging along hard surfaces to hold mulch in and reinforce a consistent appearance throughout your landscape

Pre-Emergent Herbicide Application

Bed pre-emergent acts as a barrier in your landscape beds by preventing new weeds from germinating.

We recommend applying a bed pre-emergent (such as Snapshot or Preen) prior to installing fresh mulch each spring

Watering

With the lack of precipitation, we recommend watering your garden, especially evergreens or new plant materials

The important thing to remember when watering is to water plant roots deeply (and infrequently) to allow plant roots to grow deeper into the soil, which will result in more drought-resistant plants

Mulch

Re-fresh mulch annually to enjoy a uniform appearance and fresh aroma! We recommend a consistent depth of 2”-3”inches (See our mulch blog for industry best practices!)

Be careful to avoid mulch “volcanoes” (excessive mulch build-up around the collar of a tree)

Spring Cleaning Checklist for your Lawn

Mowing

Good news! As your lawn is actively growing, it is now ok to start mowing turfgrass

Mowing frequency should be based on the growth rate of your turfgrass, however, during the growing season we recommend once every 5-7 days on average

As a general rule of thumb, raise the deck of your mower blade towards the upper settings to mow grass at a higher cut throughout the whole season

Follow the 1/3 rule by removing no more than 1/3 of the leaf tissue during any one mowing

For more information on mowing best practices, we recommend UNL’s article, “A Proper Mowing Key to Healthy Lawn“

Pre-Emergent and Fertilization

We recommend a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertilizer combined with a pre-emergent each spring

It is best to apply your pre-emergent when soil temperatures approach 55F as this is when crab grass and other weed seeds begin to germinate

With the expedited spring and warm soils, skip the weed-n-feed this year, which is a common first-step application

For more information on applying pre-emergent applications, we recommend UNL’s Spring Lawn Control Article

Power Rake

Typically not necessary (especially if you aerate each year) unless you have ½ inch or deeper of thatch

Exception to the rule: Zoysia grass (grass found on older homes), Buffalo grass, or during renovations

Seeding

We recommend being selective when you choose to seed your lawn

Seeding in the spring is only recommended if you have bare spots, damage, or need to spruce up your lawn for special circumstances

Spring time is not ideal due to the inconsistent temperatures, moisture and weed competition that is more active during this time of year

If you seed in the spring, DO NOT apply a pre-emergent because it will prevent your grass seeds from growing (affects good and bad seeds)

The best time to seed your lawn is during the Fall due to the steady temperatures and low weed competition

The UNL Extention Office recently posted a very informative article titled, “Why do lawn care companies maintain lawns differently than do-it-yourselfers?” We highly recommend reading this, but it also got us thinking about things people ask when they call to inquire about lawn care service.

The first question is usually regarding price and then how often or how many steps are in the fertilizing process. While these are very important questions, here are a few we wish people would ask when calling to hire us:

Are your applicators licensed in the state of Nebraska?

How much on-going education do you offer to your applicators?

Are your applicators screened and drug tested?

Hiring a company to come to your home is a big decision and we want to encourage you to ask ALL of the important questions, rather than just assuming that all lawn care companies are created equally. Here’s to spring 2015!

All too often we notice home irrigation systems running the morning after a heavy rain or in the middle of a hot July day. Most people tend to set their irrigation controllers at the beginning of spring and forget about it all season long.

The problem with this is unnecessary, inefficient water usage and wasted money. The UNL Extension Office says the best way to save a significant amount of water and money is to simply turn your irrigation controller off and run it manually. Read more from the UNL Extension Office:

I recently returned from the Turfgrass Field Day, hosted by UNL at the John Seaton Anderson Turfgrass Research Facility near Mead, Nebraska. Field Day gives lawn care professionals from around the state an opportunity to discuss what has been happening throughout the year, and also learn from University professionals about new products and techniques we can use. Below are a few discussions that dominated the day:

It has been a tough season, centered on two main challenges: grassy weeds and fungi. The record rains have worked to flush a little of the pre-emergent fertilizer out, allowing crabgrass and other grassy weeds to grow. The rain was then followed by record heat, making it difficult to apply chemicals to lawns. The heat allowed the crabgrass to grow to a point where it became difficult to manage. Now that temperatures have leveled off we are able to revisit lawns and spray for crabgrass again. If crabgrass has been a serious problem (mostly along the edges) we can spot seed in the fall to maintain a thick lawn. If the crabgrass grew patchy in the middle, your lawn should naturally fill itself in with better weather.

Many lawns in Eastern Nebraska are experiencing a bad fungus problem, caused by hot days combined with hot, humid nights. The best ways to defend against fungus as a homeowner is to ensure you are watering 3-4 times a week for 30-45 minutes each station between 4AM and8AM, remove thatch buildup, and aerate your lawn to allow proper air circulation and irrigation. If the fungus kills large portions of the lawn we can come by in the fall, remove the dirt, add a fresh layer of dirt, and seed.

If you suspect grub damage is occurring to your lawn please contact us immediately. Grub damage can be mitigated rather quickly; however grubs can severely damage a lawn if left unchecked. Also, Japanese Beetles are beginning to do some damage in the Metro area and the damage can sometimes be mistaken for grubs. The best option is to contact us if you think grubs are in your lawn and we can make the correct determination.
