In the heart of Dundee, Omaha, lies a place that holds not just history, but the memories and the spirit of a community. Memorial Park stands as a living testament to the sacrifices of our veterans and as a source of unity and solace for families across generations.
In 2023, as we marked the 75th anniversary of this beloved park, the Sun Valley Landscaping team had the privilege of contributing to its ongoing legacy.
A Park Rich in History
Before we delve into our involvement with Memorial Park, it is crucial to acknowledge the rich history that encapsulates this space. Memorial Park, a place of profound significance, has been a refuge for reflection and remembrance since its inception. To truly appreciate the magnitude of our involvement, we invite you to explore the fascinating history on page 6 of the Dundee Newsletter’s 75th Anniversary edition.
Memorial Park holds a special place in our hearts. It’s where we run, play with our children and dogs, and gather with our families. It embodies the living memorial that the park’s founders envisioned, and it plays a pivotal role in our Dundee neighborhood and the broader Omaha community.
The plaza we designed was intentionally crafted for gatherings, community events, and public art displays, such as the magnificent Embracing Peace Kissing Sailor Statue currently on display.
Sun Valley Landscaping’s Dedication to Memorial Park
Our journey with Memorial Park began when we joined hands with the Omaha Parks Foundation, embracing the responsibility of designing and installing the landscape in front of the plaza. This collaboration allowed us to contribute not only our time and expertise but also to pay homage to the park’s deep-rooted history.
We were inspired by the historical photos depicting the installation of the original landscape, a reminder of the enduring legacy we were entrusted with.
Our team at Sun Valley Landscaping dedicated over 150 hours of labor and $1,000 worth of materials to the park this year. We faced challenges along the way, notably with irrigation, but our unwavering commitment to preserving Memorial Park’s essence guided us through.
In any meaningful endeavor, collaboration is key, and this project was no exception. The City of Omaha Parks Department generously provided the flowers and irrigation. These vibrant blooms, nurtured at Hanscom Park Greenhouse, are a testament to the connection between history and nature. The terracotta pots, still in use since 1890, tell a story of their own!
Mulhall’s Nursery also played a crucial role in our endeavor, contributing to the yews that now grace the landscape in front of the plaza. Their support was invaluable in bringing this vision to life.
